💨 Abstract

A study reveals that Australian Bogong moths use the night sky for annual migrations. They travel about 620 miles to cooler caves and return to breed. Bogong moths are the first known invertebrates to navigate using stars. Experiments showed moths correctly oriented when the star pattern was accurate but were disoriented when stars were scrambled. They rely on the night sky and Earth’s magnetic field for guidance, and future research will explore which celestial features they use.
