On July 15, 2025, a federal judge in Texas struck down a Biden-era rule by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) that aimed to remove medical debt from credit reports. The judge ruled that the CFPB exceeded its authority under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The rule, which would have benefited millions of Americans by improving their credit scores and making it easier to obtain mortgages, particularly affected minority groups.
