💨 Abstract
Starting August 1, 2025, New York will offer free phone calls in its state prisons, aiming to reduce tension and recidivism by strengthening family connections. Currently, inmates get three free 15-minute calls weekly, with charges for additional calls. This change follows similar policies in New York City jails since 2019 and in Connecticut and a few other states. The cost of the policy is included in the state’s corrections budget.
