💨 Abstract

In 2025, Virginia Democrats are preparing to propose legislation recognizing Indigenous People’s Day as an official state holiday. The holiday, already observed informally in Virginia, would replace Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. Introduced by Del. Rae Cousins and supported by Indigenous advocacy groups like The Pocahontas Project, the bill aims to honor Indigenous histories and cultures. However, it faces opposition from Republicans and Italian-American groups who value Columbus Day.
