💨 Abstract
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa will not attend the Arab League summit in Baghdad this week, instead sending the foreign minister. Known for his past ties to al-Qaida, al-Sharaa has been working to rebuild Syria after a long civil war and to improve relations with other Middle Eastern countries. His attendance would have been symbolic but contentious, especially with Iraqi Shiite groups. The summit is set for Saturday amid political divisions triggered by the invitation.
