💨 Abstract
Ion Iliescu, Romania's first post-communist president, has died at 95. He led the country after the 1989 revolution and faced charges of crimes against humanity for his role in the violent uprising. Iliescu denied wrongdoing and was never convicted. He served as president from 1990-1996 and 2000-2004, guiding Romania towards NATO membership.
