An earthquake of magnitude 8.7 struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami alerts for Japan and the West Coast of the U.S., including California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. The quake occurred at 8:25 a.m. local time and was felt slightly in Japan's Hokkaido. No immediate damage was reported. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the magnitude and depth at 12 miles.
