💨 Abstract
Due to recent geopolitical tensions, particularly the Ukraine-Russia war, European countries are revisiting compulsory military service. NATO leaders have pledged to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. Several countries, including Austria, Cyprus, and Finland, already have mandatory conscription. Others, like Latvia, Croatia, and Serbia, have recently reintroduced or plan to reintroduce compulsory military service. Germany and Italy are also considering such measures.
