💨 Abstract

UK forecasters are monitoring Storm Erin, currently off the coast of Africa, but it's unclear if it will reach the UK. The naming of storms, such as recent Storms Eowyn and Floris, follows a system updated annually. The storm names are selected by the UK's Met Office along with Irish and Dutch weather services. The names often have historical or cultural significance. The naming system began in 2015 to simplify communication about severe weather.
