💨 Abstract
A migrant sex offender, Hadush Kebatu, was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford after being jailed for assaulting a 14-year-old. The error, called "totally unacceptable" by PM Keir Starmer, involved multiple oversight failures, including potential name misspellings or wrong files. A former prison officer blamed understaffing and systemic issues. Kebatu, confused, was later seen returning to the prison but was sent away.
