💨 Abstract

158 giant tortoises have been reintroduced to Floreana Island in the Galapagos, a species thought to have disappeared in the 19th century. These tortoises were bred at the Fausto Llerena captive breeding center using genetic ties to a lineage found on Wolf Volcano. The release is part of a phased reintroduction program, with potential for up to 12 locally extinct species.
