💨 Abstract
Doctors are advocating for bacterial vaginosis (BV), affecting around one billion women globally, to be reclassified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI). BV, caused by an imbalance of vaginal bacteria, impacts about a third of UK women. Recent studies show treating male partners improves cure rates, suggesting sexual transmission. Countries like Australia, the US, and Canada already manage BV within their STI frameworks. In the UK, outdated guidelines and lack of partner treatment contribute to high recurrence rates.
