💨 Abstract

The New Zealand government postponed a vote on suspending three Maori lawmakers who performed a haka during a bill reading. The parliamentary privileges committee recommended suspending the lawmakers, citing intimidating behavior. The haka was performed before a vote on a controversial treaty reinterpretation bill. The suspension vote was deferred to allow all members to participate in the federal budget debate. Protests and calls for a compromise censure instead of suspension have arisen. The haka is a traditional Maori ceremonial dance.
