💨 Abstract
The United Nations has praised Zimbabwe for abolishing the death penalty, urging other countries to follow suit or impose a moratorium on capital punishment. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed a law on Tuesday that will commute death row sentences to jail terms for about 60 prisoners. The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, lauded the move as a step towards human dignity and the right to life.
