💨 Abstract
In September 2025, the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM imposed a fuel blockade on Mali, targeting convoys near Kayes and Nioro, destroying at least 40 tankers. The blockade disrupted Mali’s key trade route with Senegal, causing fuel shortages and economic concerns in Bamako. Mali’s military responded with airstrikes, but analysts warn of deeper instability. JNIM aims to weaken Mali’s government and control strategic Sahel corridors.
