💨 Abstract

During the Christmas period, over 50,000 people crossed the Lebombo border between South Africa and Mozambique, causing kilometer-long queues and significant delays. The Border Management Authority (BMA) attributed the chaos to a return to pre-COVID travel volumes and severe staffing and infrastructure constraints. The BMA is operating at just 25% of its intended capacity, with only 2,600 officers instead of the planned 11,000.
