đź’¨ Abstract
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in South Africa has recovered R1.7 billion in improperly held National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funds from universities, TVET colleges, and unqualified students. The funds, dating from 2016 to 2021, were meant for qualifying students who later changed institutions or deregistered. Weak control systems and poor reconciliation processes at NSFAS exacerbated the issue.
