💨 Abstract
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa distanced himself from Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya's unauthorized trip to Iran. Maphwanya endorsed Iran's stance on Gaza and called for closer ties, drawing criticism. Neither Ramaphosa nor his office authorized the trip. The presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya described the visit as poorly timed and ill-advised, particularly given the sensitive geopolitical climate and South Africa's efforts to improve relations with the United States.
