💨 Abstract
In the Western Cape, road fatalities have surged dramatically this August, with 52 deaths in just the first 11 days—a nearly 86% increase from the same period in 2024. Pedestrians and motorcycle riders are particularly vulnerable, with reckless driving, cellphone use, and drunk driving identified as major causes. The Western Cape Mobility Minister, Isaac Sileku, has urgently appealed for safer road behavior.
