💨 Abstract

In 2005, Baland Jalal, an undergraduate student, woke up paralyzed and terrified, experiencing what he now knows to be sleep paralysis. After this episode, Jalal, who is from Egypt, became dedicated to studying and understanding this phenomenon, obtaining a Ph.D. in psychiatry. Sleep paralysis occurs during the transition to or from REM sleep. About 30% of people worldwide experience it at least once, often involving hallucinations of terrifying entities.
