💨 Abstract

Early humans during the Old Stone Age, approximately 2.6 million years ago, were selective about the rocks they used for tool-making. They planned ahead by locating and traveling to sites with suitable raw materials, sometimes up to 8 miles away. At the Nyayanga site in Kenya, they used durable quartzite to create sharp blades for butchering large animals like hippos.
