💨 Abstract
Pope Leo XIV urged prayers for China's Catholics, hoping to unify China's divided Catholic community. This community is split between an official, state-run church and an underground, Rome-loyal church. Leo's predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, had initiated efforts to reunite these groups. Pope Francis furthered these efforts with a 2018 bishop nomination deal with China, criticized by some for concessions to Beijing.
