💨 Abstract

A sudden, severe cold snap from Antarctica hit Uruguay, causing at least seven homeless deaths and prompting a state of emergency. Temperatures dropped to minus 3°C (26°F), with windchill making it feel much colder. The government opened shelters and forcibly removed homeless people from the streets. Authorities prepared over 1,000 extra beds and allowed pets and belongings in the shelters.
