💨 Abstract
On July 27, 2025, al-Shabab extremist rebels seized control of the central Somali town of Mahaas after an assault that included explosions and a ground offensive. Located about 350 kilometers north of Mogadishu, Mahaas is a key government outpost. Federal and local forces withdrew before the rebels entered the town. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, and there were reported casualties, including a provincial intelligence representative.
