Instanbul's opposition mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, was convicted by a Turkish court for insulting and threatening a public official, receiving a sentence of 1 year and 8 months. Imamoglu, a rival to President Erdogan, was jailed in March and accused of politically motivated remarks. Despite his arrest, he was nominated as the presidential candidate for the CHP party. His trial has sparked protests and criticism, with opposition leaders claiming political motivation behind his arrest and subsequent charges.
