💨 Abstract

A federal court in New York dealt a significant blow to U.S. President Donald Trump by blocking his plan to impose massive tariffs on imports from nearly all countries. The court ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to declare a national emergency and justify the tariffs. These tariffs reversed decades of U.S. trade policy, disrupted global commerce, and increased recession risks. The decision can be appealed to higher courts.
