💨 Abstract
Around 57% of the average UK diet consists of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which are linked to increased risks of autism, depression, dementia, and various cancers. These foods are believed to be harmful due to high levels of microplastics, which come from packaging, additives, and processing equipment. Microplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier, causing oxidative stress and damaging the central nervous system.
