💨 Abstract
A large US study suggests that treating herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which causes cold sores, with antiviral medicines may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by 17%. The study found that people infected with HSV-1 had an 80% increased risk of Alzheimer's, but antiviral treatment reduced this risk. However, experts caution that HSV-1 is common and does not guarantee Alzheimer's development. The mechanism involves potential brain inflammation and amyloid plaque formations.
