💨 Abstract
Ian McKeever, a horse carriage driver in New York’s Central Park, was acquitted of animal cruelty. His horse, Ryder, collapsed on a hot day in August 2022. The driver maintained the horse wasn't overworked. Jurors decided there wasn't sufficient evidence to support the charge. Animal rights advocates have long opposed the carriages, while supporters cite their historic importance and economic benefits. Ryder was later euthanized due to bone cancer.
