💨 Abstract
On July 22, 2025, a U.S. appeals court overturned a New Jersey law that prohibited private firms from contracting with the federal government to run immigration detention centers. The decision allows CoreCivic Corp. to continue operating the Elizabeth Detention Center, supporting President Donald Trump's administration's efforts to expand detention centers for increased deportations. The court ruled that states cannot regulate private parties in ways that hinder federal immigration enforcement.
