💨 Abstract
The Dalai Lama announced that he will have a successor after his death, continuing a centuries-old tradition. This announcement, made just before his 90th birthday, defies China's claim that it alone has the authority to approve his successor. The Dalai Lama stated that the Gaden Phodrang Trust will handle the recognition process, adhering to past traditions. China, however, insists that the reencarnation must comply with Chinese laws and be identified within China.
