💨 Abstract

An antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) presence has been found in South African rivers and tap water, particularly downstream of wastewater treatment plants. The discovery shows good adherence to medication among HIV-positive patients. However, the level of ARVs in the water poses serious health risks, and researchers warn of potential metabolic system disruptions across species. The Department of Health and Water and Sanitation has noted the findings and will engage with university researchers to address the issue.
