The U.S. immigration agency was ordered to suspend its Diversity Visa (DV1) program, known as the "visa lottery," after the suspect in the Brown University shooting entered the country through it. Claudio Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown University student, received a green card via this program in 2017. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated that Valente should not have been admitted.
