💨 Abstract
Vietnam lifted the death penalty for eight crimes, including financial fraud, as part of legal edits made in this month. This change makes Truong My Lan, the real estate tycoon jailed for Vietnam’s biggest financial fraud totaling $12.5 billion, eligible for sentence reduction. The 67-year-old’s maximum penalty is now life imprisonment without parole. Vietnam’s highest court will conduct a final review and once this is completed, Lan’s sentence will likely be lowered.
